Founded in 1958 and originally sitting on Jiangxin Island, Wenzhou Museum moved into its new building in 2003 at the west of the Century Square at Shifu Road in the downtown Wenzhou. Wenzhou Museum exhibits more than 20,000 pieces of cultural relics falling into 20 categories including pottery, bronze ware, painted sculptures, brick carvings, lacquer ware, paintings and calligraphies etc, among which pottery, painted sculptures, and paintings are the museum’s featured relics. The main fine treasures collected from home and abroad include the land purchase certificate of Zhu Man’s wife Mrs. Xue back in the Eastern Jin Dynasty unearthed in the Yishan Mountain, the hand-written scriptures of the Tang Dynasty unearthed from the Jinsha Pagoda, the painted sculptures of the Northern Song Dynasty unearthed from the Baixiang Pagoda, the celadon of the Northern Song Dynasty unearthed from the West Hill etc.

Wenzhou Museum has a construction area of about 26,000 square meters with a total exhibition area of 8000 square meters. The 2,100-square-meter historical hall displays the footprints of the “Wenzhou people” in the past 5,000 years. Six thematic exhibition halls are set in addition, including painting and calligraphy hall, pottery hall, natural museum, arts hall, etc. The display makes full use of spatial composition, and strives to achieve breakthroughs and innovations in content design and art forms in order to fully show a large number of cultural treasures and explore deeper into their cultural connotation, so that more viewers will be attracted to the traditional culture and know more about the history of Wenzhou.

Wenzhou Science & Technology Museum

Wenzhou Science and Technology Museum, a base for science education in Wenzhou, covers a construction area of 26,000 square meters and an exhibition area of 15,000 square meters. The museum houses over 230 exhibits in two exhibition sections. The southern part is intended mainly for adolescents, where they can learn scientific knowledge and develop their interest in science and technology. The northern part, covering three floors, is laid out with the theme of 3F, field, frontier and future. Equipped with a 4D cinema, the first floor focuses on sounds, visual sense, colors, force, machine and electromagnetism. On the second floor display different exhibits about transportation, environment, ancient astronomy, new energy, new materials and so on. The third one introduces knowledge about digital products, nano technology and robots.

Wenzhou Southern Opera Museum

Wenzhou Southern Opera Museum sits on the former site of the old Yikang Bank in the downtown Wenzhou, a traditional courtyard house with a total construction area of over 700 square meters. As a typical architecture in the period of the Republic of China (1912 - 1949), the house has a three-storey main building and a baroque façade.

The Southern Opera, originating in the Northern Song Dynasty in Wenzhou, is considered as the earliest opera in China. Wenzhou Southern Opera Museum collects a large quantity of cultural and historical materials about the Sothern Opera, including classic operas of various versions, typical Southern opera characters, costumes, facial makeups and accompanying musical instruments. Meanwhile, the museum exhibits several miniature opera stages, which are built based on the real folk opera stage in the ancient times of Wenzhou. The ceilings of the exhibition halls are also worth seeing, where different opera scenes are painted in a traditional way.

Wenzhou Folk Museum

Wenzhou Folk Museum, located in the campus of Wenzhou University, is a professional museum exhibiting Wenzhou’s colorful local folk customs and arts. Established by Wenzhou Municipal Government and Wenzhou University, the 700-square-meter museum houses over 800 pieces of exhibits related to Wenzhou’s folklore to reflect Wenzhou’s traditional folk culture. Meanwhile, the museum also serves as a platform for local heritage and culture education in Wenzhou.

The exhibition mainly shows Wenzhou’s local customs in three aspects, production, daily life and folk arts. The part of production customs focuses on different local customs in agriculture, fishery, dyeing, weaving, paper-making and porcelain making, while in the section of daily life customs, visitors get to know traditional clothing, architecture and household wares made of wood, metal, bamboo and porcelain. In addition, the museum exhibits most of Wenzhou’s typical folk arts, including paper-cutting, Ou embroidery, Ou porcelain, puppetry and wooden movable type printing.

Wenzhou Celebrity Mathematician Museum

Wenzhou Celebrity Mathematician Museum is situated in a traditional building of typical Wenzhou residential house. Previously located at No.11, Gaoyingli, Lucheng District in the downtown Wenzhou, it was once the ancestral home of Gu Chaohao, a famous mathematician born in Wenzhou. In 2006, the whole building was removed to BailuzhouPark, facing Nantang Street on the other side of the river.

Formally opened to visitors in November 2012, Wenzhou Celebrity Mathematician Museum now has 8 exhibition halls to introduce 29 Wenzhou-born mathematicians in different time periods in the sequence of their birth year, including Su Buqing, Gu Chaohao, Jiang Lifu, Chen Dayue, Luo Feng and Cai Shen’ou etc. Their scientific achievements, works and careers are shown by photos, statues, hair embroideries and videos etc.

Since the end of Qing Dynasty, Wenzhou has given birth to numerous mathematicians who make great accomplishments in their own fields. Once many deans of the mathematics college of China’s major universities were Wenzhounese. Since the 1940s, 9 academicians in mathematics from China’s Central Research Academy and Chinese Academy of Sciences are of Wenzhou origin. Thus, Wenzhou is reputed as the cradle of mathematicians.

How Art Museum Wenzhou

Founded by a Wenzhou entrepreneur in 2013, How Art Museum Wenzhou is located in an auxiliary building in the luxurious Onehome H.S. Art Hotel at Jiangbin East Road in Wenzhou, China. As the first private art gallery in Wenzhou, the museum has an exhibition space of more than 1,300 square meters. Meanwhile, it is a sister museum of How Art Museum Shanghai.

How Art Museum Wenzhou hopes to grow into a Wenzhou-based international communication platform for different artists, covering contemporary art collection, exhibition, research and education etc.
