He can not only speak Chinese, but also some words of Wenzhou dialect, a local language hard to learn even for Chinese from other cities. At present, his Chinese has equaled to that of a 6-year-old Chinese child.
Aaron Ranck, a 25-year-old American, has lived in Wenzhou for two and half years. He works as a foreign teacher in Wenzhou Medical College. He can only speak a few Chinese words, like how are you and good morning. When going outside, he is generally accompanied by his girlfriend or his students so that they can be his translator.
In their daily life in Wenzhou, foreigners generally have no problem in communicating with locals. Some of them can speak a little Chinese, while a few of them have a good mastery of Chinese and even Wenzhou dialect.
400 foreigners in Wenzhou, mainly from Europe, Asia and North America
"Wenzhou is our another home. I will stay here for my fourth Christmas in Wenzhou." A couple of days ago, Yana Grinblat from Russia received "Yandang Friendship Award", a title especially for foreign experts in Wenzhou, which was a great news for her. She is working as a foreign teacher in a primary school in Wenzhou.
According to Wenzhou Foreign Experts Bureau, the number of registered foreign experts in teaching is about 170, most of whom come from English-speaking countries like Canada, U.S, U.K, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Philippines and South Africa etc. They generally teach foreign languages in schools, colleges and training institutions in Wenzhou.
At present, there are around 400 foreigners in Wenzhou with valid work permit. They come from over 40 countries in the world, mainly Europe, Asia and North America. A large part of them are from Korea, Pakistan, France, Japan, Russia, U.S and U.K.
Foreigners in Wenzhou mainly work in foreign language teaching, technology, management and trade.
Arnel. P. Cruz from Philippines speaks a fluent Chinese. He has been in Wenzhou for 4 years and now works as a technical manager in a car service company. As an expert in car repair, he trains over 30 apprentices in the company to teach them his technology. His pupils often call him "Brother Fei".
Most of foreigners in Wenzhou work in the sectors of trade, education, technology and management. Some of them teach foreign languages in schools, some serve as technical experts and senior managers in companies, and a few of them are employed in joint ventures or self-employed. Several years ago, most foreigners came to Wenzhou as foreign teachers, while nowadays more and more have work for companies in Wenzhou.
Koreans in Wenzhou are mainly engaged in the production and trading of optical glasses and shoes etc, Indians in Wenzhou show them up as chefs, and Russians mainly have trading business. For Pakistanis, they generally register a company in their country and then set up an office in China to introduce Wenzhou's auto parts and consumer electronics to Pakistan.
Bars and traveling, their main entertainments
Cowboy Erics Pub and La Luna, two bars in the downtown Wenzhou, are well received by foreigners in Wenzhou. At night, foreigners from different countries are regular customers there. They get to know new friends and talk about their life there.
Nick from the United States has been in Wenzhou for 2 years. He likes bar life and he will go to bars with his friends every two weeks for a cup of beer. Sometimes, they also organize their friends for barbecue and singing. For foreigners in Wenzhou, Halloween and Christmas are two special holidays when they gather at bars for costume balls.
Besides the bar life, foreigners also enjoy traveling. They like to hang out to other places. Nick said he was preparing a trip to Taizhou and Hangzhou with his friends the next week.
Aaron Ranck and his girlfriend will also make use of their holidays to travel in China. In Wenzhou, he has been to Nanxi River, whose beautiful scenery has left him a deep impression. Cities like Xiamen, Lijiang and Nanjing etc have also their footprints. He said he planned to travel in Malaysia in the following days.
Foreigners in Wenzhou prefer apartments in Xialvpu, Xincheng and Dananmen.
Both Hyde Warren and Aaron Ranck are foreign teachers at Wenzhou Medical College. At present, they rent apartments in the downtown Xialvpu, a main residential area in Wenzhou. They like to live there because of its complete and convenient facilities for daily life and transportation.
According to a real estate intermediary, foreigners prefer to rent apartments in the downtown areas like Xincheng, Xialvpu and Dananmen where they can enjoy complete and convenient living facilities and transportation.
